Глава вторая. КОЩЕЙ ПОД ПОДОЗРЕНИЕМ
Леший получил экстренный выпуск «СВ» одним из первых и сразу решил показать газету другу.
— Эй, Горыныч! Хватит спать! Тут тебя в прессе пропечатали.
— В самом деле — я! — обрадовалась правая голова Змея.
— С детьми на шеях! — печально вздохнула левая.
— Что вздыхаешь, Горыныч? Или уже по Ваньке с Алёнкой соскучился? — участливо спросил Леший. — Может, ещё вернутся? Сказки ведь совсем не видели. И за Кудыкины горы не ходили.
— А что там такого особенного?! — спросил Змей Горыныч.
— Да вот редакция нашей газеты там находится. Ты редактора знаешь?
— Емелю-то? Лично не знаком. А сороку Зойку хорошо знаю.
— Ещё бы! Газеты нам целый год носит, — кивнул Леший.
— А кто там ещё живёт — за горами?
— Ну, хотя бы дед Пихтарь! — ответил Леший.
— А кто это такой? Я же три года никуда не летал, ничего не видал.
— Твоя правда. Дед Пихтарь — хранитель Живого Ключа, что в Пихтовых лесах.
— Из которого живую воду берут?
— Ну да. Другого такого родника во всей Сказке нет. Раньше Живой Ключ ничей был. Всяк, кому надо, мог из родника живой воды испить. Все пили, а за родником никто не ухаживал. Однажды на этом месте кто-то огромную свалку устроил. Зачах родник. Не смогла живая вода пробить многометровый слой мусора. Вот тут, откуда ни возьмись, и появился дед Пихтарь. Срубил избу у Живого Ключа, мусор убрал и стал за родником присматривать.
— Наверно, киоск поставил и начал водой торговать? — предположила левая голова Змея Горыныча.
— Нет. По-прежнему, бесплатно раздаёт.
— Такой бескорыстный?!
— Альтруист, — подтвердил Леший.
— Это похвально. Но чем же он живёт?! — спросил Горыныч.
— У него огород вокруг дома, своё хозяйство: куры, пасека. Опять же лес кормит: грибы, орехи, ягоды.
— Да… Другой на его месте — Кощей, например, — давно бы уже на воде бизнес сделал, — сказала средняя голова и вдруг насторожилась. — Чу! Кто-то идёт!
— Не бойсь! Свои!
Это появились Иван-царевич с Василисой Премудрой. Они сидели на спине Серого Волка. Волк улыбался, щуря глаза на солнце.
— Куда это вы едете? И зачем? — спросил Леший.
— В столицу — на выборы, — ответил Иван. — Я слышал, вы про Кощея сейчас толковали? Ваш Кощей не то что водой, а и воздухом скоро торговать начнёт! Вот как выберете его президентом, он всю Сказку продаст! И вас в придачу!
— По какому такому праву ты нашего кандидата чернишь?! — накинулся на Ивана Леший.
— По праву его главного оппонента.
— Зачем от царства отрёкся, ежели власть Кощею отдавать не хочешь?!
— Он хочет, чтоб по-честному было, по справедливости! — вступилась за мужа Василиса.
— Ну, уж чего-чего, а справедливости вы от нас, отрицательных, никогда не дождётесь! — рассмеялся Леший.
— Посмотрим! Вот ты, Леший, уже не так рьяно за Кощея заступаешься. Видно, и ты в нём разуверился! — сказал царевич.
— Разуверился ли, нет ли — моё дело! А за тебя голосовать не стану, можешь не агитировать! Уж лучше совсем на выборы не пойду!
— Дело твоё. Только не пришлось бы потом локти кусать!
— Это с чего это я локти буду кусать?! — нахмурился Леший.
— С того, что после избрания Кощея президентом к власти в стране могут прийти киногерои.
— Эва загнул! Да мы же их в бараний рог скрутили! Я лично в сражении участие принимал!
— Правильно. Победить-то мы их победили, а вот выдворить из Сказки — на радостях — позабыли.
— Виноват, — сказал Горыныч. — Я хотел проводить их до самых росстаней, а вместо этого для фотографии позировал.
— Ты-то чего встреваешь?! — рассердился на него Леший.
— Лёш, а ведь царевич дело говорит! — ответил Змей Горыныч. — Кощею мы нужны только как избиратели. А как президентом станет, опять о нас забудет.
— Вас не просто фотографировали. Кикимора отвлекала внимание. О киногероях забыли, а они тем временем полетели в сторону Кощеева замка. Это значит, что они остались у нас в Сказке.
— Получается, что Кощей их отпустил? — спросил Леший.
— Он с ними договорился, — ответил Иван.
— Договорился?! О чём?
— Ха! Если б я знал!., Только мне показалось странным, что Чёрную Молнию связали, а трое её подручных остались на свободе. Их всех бы следовало связать.
— Царевич, ты уверен, что Кощей…
— Перед тем, как подарить киногероям свой лимузин, Кощей о чём-то шептался с кибером. Видимо, только я обратил на это внимание, — сказал Иван-царевич.
— Ладно. Чего ты хочешь? — неожиданно спросил Леший.
— Только одного: чтобы вы, отрицательные, не проморгали врага. Будет здорово, если ты потолкуешь с Бабой Ягой…
Иван-царевич пришпорил Волка, и все трое исчезли в зарослях высокой травы.
— Как хорошо начинался день! — вздохнул Леший. — И вдруг — нате, получите и распишитесь! Ты ему поверил, Горыныч?
— Зачем царевичу врать? Да и не к лицу враньё положительным. Я ему верю. Кощей ничего просто так не делает. Он что-то задумал.
— Ой, Лёш! Погляди! Кто это там?! — воскликнул Змей Горыныч.
В высоком безоблачном небе летели три белые птицы. Рукой заслонив глаза от солнца, Леший следил за их полётом.
— Да это же наши почтари! — воскликнул он. — Соскучились поди по дому-то. Возвращаются.
Голуби сделали круг над Змеиными пещерами и стали снижаться. Обрадованный Леший пошёл им навстречу, высоко подняв руки над головой. Голуби сели к нему на плечи.
— Ну вот, мои дорогие! — прослезился Леший. — Вернулись! А я вас ждал! Ведь хорошо вам у меня жилось, правда? Идёмте, я вас накормлю, напою!
Голуби вспорхнули и дружно полетели к своей клетке, что стояла у входа в пещеру.
— Жизнь вроде налаживается! — сказал Леший, проходя мимо Горыныча. — Всё будет по-прежнему, а может, даже лучше.
— Конечно, ведь мы с тобой теперь молодые да сильные, — поддакнул ему Горыныч.
Глава третья. ЗА РЕКОЙ СМОРОДИНОЙ
Молочную реку только называли рекой, а на самом деле это был маленький Молочный ручей, протекающий по опушке соснового леса. Если бы не топкие кефирные берега, Молочный ручей можно было бы перепрыгнуть — такой он был узкий. Он прятался в зарослях одуванчиков, теряясь, в конце концов, у подножия песчаного холма. Никто не знал, откуда молоко берётся и куда исчезает. Но по вкусу оно ничем не отличалось от коровьего.
Одуванчики на холме росли на удивление большие и пушистые. А с холма открывался вид на реку Смородину — спокойную и прозрачную настолько, что можно было рассмотреть на дне каждый камушек. Один берег реки был крут и обрывист. По склону обрыва, в глубоких норках, издавна селились ласточки. Другой берег, пологий и песчаный, был больше похож на пляж. Над пляжем мрачной стеной нависал пихтовый лес. Где-то там, в глубине леса, бил из-под земли Живой Ключ и стояла избушка деда Пихтаря.
Дед Пихтарь — невысокий, но крепкий и широкий в плечах старик — подошёл к избушке с полной корзиной грибов. Одет он был немного странно: спортивный костюм, бейсболка и валенки. Пол-лица скрывала седая окладистая борода, а из-под кустистых бровей глядели строгие, но добрые глаза.
Пихтарь сел на завалинку отдохнуть, а заодно перебрать грибы. Червивые он отбрасывал в сторону, хорошие складывал в котелок. В это время в окне избушки появилась любопытная беличья мордочка. Завидев деда, белка радостно зацокала и в мгновение ока очутилась у него на плече.
— Дедушка пришёл! — весело затараторила она. — А что дедушка принёс? Грибов?! Это хорошо! Давай, я помогу тебе их разобрать.
Ну, помоги, Внучка! — сказал дед.
Белочка жила у Пихтаря второй год. Он принёс её в дом больным беспомощным бельчонком. Отпоил живой водой, выкормил и решил назвать Сироткой, потому что родителей у неё не было. Но белочка с ним заспорила: «Какая же я Сиротка, если у меня есть ты, дедушка?! Назови меня лучше Внучкой!» Пихтарь от души посмеялся, но с белочкой пришлось согласиться. Так и стала с тех пор она Внучкой…
Белочка прыгнула в корзину и стала подавать деду самые свежие грибы: подосиновики, белые, маслята.
— Вот этот возьми, дедушка, и этот возьми. А этот вот, подберёзовик, можно, я сама съем? Уж больно он мне понравился.
— Съешь, конечно. О чём разговор?!
— Спасибо, дедушка.
— На здоровье!
Внучка схватила зубами гриб и в три прыжка очутилась на дереве. Она оглянулась на деда и стала нанизывать гриб на острую веточку.
— Прятать понесла, — усмехнулся Пихтарь. — Запасливая.
Дед Пихтарь окинул взглядом своё хозяйство. Вокруг избушки ходили куры, они что-то искали в траве. На плетне, нахохлившись, дремал петух. Гудели пчёлы, возвращаясь в ульи с грузом нектара. Привычная жизнь шла своим чередом, и она была прекрасна.
— Дедушка, а мы сегодня за водой пойдём? — спросила Внучка.
— Я же приносил воду. В избе, на лавке, ведро.
— Прости меня, дедушка, я резвилась и нечаянно воду пролила. — Внучка виновато опустила голову. — Ты не будешь ругаться?
— Что поделаешь, — вздохнул Пихтарь, даже не думая сердиться на Внучку. — Пролила — значит, новой наберём. Резвиться тоже надо…. Сейчас ведро возьму, и пойдём…. Постой, если ты в избе воду пролила, значит, пол мокрый?
— А я, небось, воду собрала. Полы сухие.
— О-о-о! Зато ты вся мокрая! Ты что, собой, что ли, полы протирала?
— Нет, тряпкой.
— Ладно. Молодец, Внучка. Пошли за водой.
Дед Пихтарь взял ведро, и они пошли знакомой тропинкой к реке Смородине. Белочка бежала за ним следом, перепрыгивая с ветки на ветку. Вскоре впереди заблестела река. Внучка обогнала деда и, добежав до воды, принялась жадно пить.
— Это с чего у тебя такая жажда? — удивился дед. — Опять весь день орехи ела? Или семечки?
— Дедушка, а когда ты молочка принесёшь свеженького? — вопросом на вопрос ответила Внучка. — Уж больно я по молочку из Молочной реки соскучилась.
— Ишь ты, соскучилась, — усмехнулся дед Пихтарь. — Завтра с утра за лодкой схожу и сплаваю на тот берег. Сколь привезти-то? Бидончик?
— Бидончика мало будет. Флягу бы надо.
— Куда столько? Скиснет.
— Да я ежей угостить обещала. Им самим на тот берег никак не перебраться.
— Ну, раз обещала, стало быть, привезу вам флягу.
— Спасибо, дедушка! А сейчас давай сходим на реку, в Волшебную школу. Если ты не устал, конечно.
— Вообще-то устал… Ну, да ладно, пошли. Послушаем, чему сегодня Аграфена щурят учить будет.
Совсем недалеко от них — метрах в ста вверх по течению реки — находилась школа щуки Аграфены. Каждый вечер там шли занятия для будущих волшебников. Учеников набралась целая тысяча. Жаль только, что до сих пор ни одного талантливого щурёнка Аграфена не нашла. Ей было, конечно, досадно, но она продолжала занятия, надеясь подготовить к концу лета первую тысячу грамотных интеллигентных щук.
Щуку Аграфену Пихтарь увидел издали. Наполовину высунувшись из воды, она возлежала на большом белом камне, заменявшем ей кафедру. На десятки метров вокруг из воды торчали зубастые умные мордочки учеников. Все усиленно работали плавниками, чтобы не унесло течением. От этого вода в реке бурлила, как в кипящей кастрюле.
Аграфена задала вопрос по психологии:
— Кто скажет, что делать, если вас поймали и хотят сварить?
— Надо защищаться! Кусаться и бить хвостом! — посыпались ответы.
— Хорошо. Вы кусались и били хвостом… Но вас всё равно потащили в кастрюлю. Шансов остаться в живых у вас очень мало.
— Это у рыбака очень мало шансов остаться в живых! — ответила молодая щука по имени Зубатка, и все засмеялись.
— Не все люди черствы и безжалостны, — сказала Аграфена. — Скажу больше: совестливых людей большинство. Так не разумнее ли начать конструктивный диалог с поймавшим вас рыбаком?! Конструктивный — значит, плодотворный, взаимовыгодный.
— Разумнее, — раздались нестройные голоса зубастиков.
— Давным-давно зимой — в проруби — меня поймал известный вам Емеля… Он хотел сварить уху. И уже представлял, какой сладкой будет уха. Но я поговорила с ним — по-человечески, — и он меня отпустил. Вот что значит конструктивный диалог! — Аграфена обвела учеников испытующим взглядом и задала контрольный вопрос: — Ну, так что вы будете делать, если вас поймают?
— Кусаться и бить хвостом! — со всех сторон посыпались ответы.
Дед Пихтарь не удержался от смеха. Аграфена встрепенулась и повернула голову в его сторону.
— Не пугайся, кума, это я, — сказал дед. — Что, не впрок ученье-то?
— Может, они и правы по-своему?! — вздохнула щука. — Что для нас в самый раз, им, возможно, не подходит. Молодёжь!
— Ну, ладно, не будем вам мешать, — извинился дед Пихтарь. — Нам пора. До свиданья.
С ведром воды в руке и с Внучкой на плече дед Пихтарь пошёл домой. Но у самой избушки дорогу ему преградил огромный лось. Голова его была увенчана ветвистыми рогами. Лось с шумом втягивал ноздрями воздух и время от времени языком лизал распухшее колено передней ноги.
— Болит? — участливо спросил Пихтарь. — Ишь как опухло! Где это тебя угораздило?
— Да я вчера прыгнул неловко, споткнулся, — простонал лось. — Шагу теперь ступить не могу. Ужас как больно! Помоги, дедушка!
— Идём к ручью. Живой водой окроплю, всё как рукой снимет.
Лось заковылял к избушке и, косясь на ведро с водой, спросил:
— А что же вы из Ключа воду не пьёте? Не лень вам каждый день на речку ходить?
— В Ключе вода особенная — живая. Она лучше всякого лекарства. А кто ж лекарство каждый день пьёт?! Понимать надо! — С этими словами дед Пихтарь побрызгал живой водой на колено лося. — Ну, ходи, сохатый, да больше не спотыкайся!
— Спасибо, дедушка! — Лось облегчённо вздохнул и сразу повеселел: — Надо же! Уже не болит! И тебе спасибо, белка!
— А мне-то за что? — засмеялась Внучка.
— Если понадоблюсь, зовите! Вы мне помогли, и я вам помогу! — уже издали прокричал лось.
— Надо же, какой вежливый! — засмущалась Внучка. — Даже мне спасибо сказал. А как тебя звать-то? — крикнула она.
— Мальчик!
— Мальчик?! — усмехнулась Внучка. — Странное имя для такого великана!
